When I encounter an odd error message and its solution, I make a note. This is one of those notes. I want solutions to turn up better in searches for other Avid users (and myself). As with all error posts on the site, the casual reader can just skip ahead to other less-technical content.
UPDATE 2017: EDL Manager is now called List Tool and has gotten a lot better. However…
I’m on a different show and getting lots of full crashes when I make EDLs (File 32 and CMX3600) with stereo media. Note: I’m using Media Composer 8.5.3.
Closing the List Tool between saving each reel seems to help. As does dragging the sequence onto the tool rather than hitting the “Load…” button. Also going slowly between steps. None of these measures has stopped the crashes completely.
An error has occurred.Restarting the application is recommended. If you need further assistance record the following information and call Avid Customer Support:

Long story short, I did not take the error message’s advice and call Avid. Instead, the first AE I am working with said that he has experienced this many times before and the way to avoid it is simply to load the sequence through the file menu’s “Open…” command. This worked for me. A full Avid reboot may be in order, although I hit “Quit” on the dialogue box and restarted only EDL Manager.
