Another Sundance Movie Goes For Bass Ackwards Distribution
John August is reporting that One Too Many Mornings, another indie movie playing at Sundance this year is planning to go to the people right after the festival:
The Mornings team is doing what I would try: skipping theatrical altogether. The day after the premiere, you can download their film or get the DVD. You can even buy a piece of the set, or buy the filmmakers lunch. They’re not going to make a lot of money, but my hunch is they will be able to get a lot more people to see their movie this way. That should be the main goal of any indie.
I already discussed the risks of this strategy with Bass Ackwards but I think One Too Many Mornings has a slightly better model, which is to have the digital version and DVD available the day after the premiere. That's really putting the chips down on the crest of the wave, if I can mix some metaphors.
Three makes a trend, so look out for another Sundance film declaring they are going cowboy and suddenly this will be a huge story. God bless these pioneer filmmakers who are willing to grease the skids for the rest of us with this model!
UPDATE: As I said, Filmmaker Mag spots the trend.
