What is a workflow? In postproductionspeak, it’s how you get footage from the camera or motion graphics program into the non-linear editor, edit it, and finish it to tape or web. The order that you do the steps, and what programs you use, can make a huge difference.

That’s why the post-pro community is going nuts for all the new Final Cut Pro documentation Apple has put up, including a section on workflows: Final Cut Studio Workflows: Introduction

I’m deciding whether to upgrade my Final Cut Studio 1. (I skipped 2.) Since I still run Tiger, it would mean installing (Snow) Leopard. Which would also mean upgrading my copy of Photoshop CS2. Although the $299 upgrade seems like a deal, when you add in the OS and Photoshop upgrades, it starts to look pricey…

And I ask myself, is it going to make any significant improvements to my workflow. I barely use my home Final Cut workflow since I have access to full Avid suites at work. On the other hand, it’s about time I caught up with the latest Final Cut Pro, because I believe editors should be capable in both programs these days… hard to know.

I’m going to have to study the workflows.
