Opera Live in Theater is Many People’s Hobby

I've been wondering whether those live-to-theater broadcasts for such things as the Metropolitan Opera were popular. Scott Kirsner of CinemaTech, as usual, has the answer. They are "wildly popular."

I think this kind of thing is good for indie filmmakers. This brings smart audiences back to the multiplex, and it creates some brainspace for people about one-off screenings. It also accustoms theater owners to one-off screenings. Downside, it may mean more competition, therefore more expense in four-walling (i.e. renting a screen).
