WGA Members Going Solo
As I thought, many WGA members are not just sitting on their hands during the strike, they are starting media entities. Now is the time.
Web and video game ventures are the obvious choice, since the big studios still have a stranglehold on traditional t.v. and movie distribution. That may start to change as the strike goes on. (And it is starting to change -- if you consider the side deals with Worldwide Pants and United Artists and the Weinstein Company.)
On the subject of the strike, I have to say that the speech by Bill Maher last night on his HBO show was pretty disheartening. He stuck it pretty hard to the guild and their leadership but didn't balance it out by sticking one to the AMPTP. I know he's always one to say the controversial, but what he said was almost exactly from an AMPTP press release. Hmm, maybe the AMPTP is providing him writers now. Anyway, people like Craig Mazin have a lot more legitimate reason for dissent, and they couch theirs in a way that is far more constructive.
