One of the best ways to discover how to work with actors is to have a very articulate actor simply tell you how she likes to work…

Notice in these rehearsals if the actor can hit her mark. If she can’t, find a way to help her. Be creative and make it fit the character.

Notice if the actor needs quiet before a moment before the camera rolls or if they can successfully go from joking with the crew to hitting their emotional mark.

Notice the actor’s vocabulary and learn it. If an actor tells you she wants to “pinch” an emotion out of another actor, learn what “pinch” means first and then answer. Don’t make things up. During filming, use their vocabulary with them.

Notice everything you can about the actor so that you know them and how to work with them when you get on set. It can be frustrating when directors can’t communicate or understand their actors during filming.
