If you haven’t stopped by the Rain in the Mountains post-production blog yet, hop to it already. Joel has some great lighting tips for low-budget films. He not only breaks down the technical aspects, but also addresses what I saw was his main concern on set: is the light motivated?

Unless there is a reason for the light to call attention to itself, it should be calling attention to the actors and props that tell the story. As the world will be able to see when Rain in the Mountains comes out, Joel — like all good d.p.‘s — is gifted at making the images really pop without looking forced. One famous cinematographer called it ‘painting with light’. It truly is an art form.
