• A History of Violence was almost completely shut out; with Munich, Crash and especially Capote getting more nominations than I expected. I did not like Capote
  • Star Wars: Ep III was nominated only for makeup, not even vfx or sound design. Ouch.
  • The New World was only nominated for cinematography but it might just win, if people aren’t suckers for Roderigo Prieto’s landscapes in Brokeback Mountain.
  • The Female Acting categories are huge toss-ups, although we can safely say that Keira Knightly will not win for Pride and Prejudice. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Amy Adams in Junebug.
  • Original Screenplay with probably go for Crash; Adapted will almost certainly go to Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for Brokeback. If it doesn’t, look for Brokeback not to win Best Picture.
  • It will be great entertainment to watch someone sing the lyrics to “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” to an international television audience. Not as much fun as when Robin Williams sang “Blame Canada” — but close.
  • Instead of showing Joan Collins being bitchy on the red carpet, they should show the nominated short films before the Oscars. Then people would actually see them and care when they announce the winner. Theater owners aren’t going to cut the commercials and show short films instead, so why not just do a television broadcast?
