There are also distribution networks coming online that will make use of them. For now, instead of shipping big reels, they are sending small hard drives. Soon, sattelite — and, in the case of Philip Anschutz’ UA/Regal theater chain, fiber optic cable laid under railroad tracks — will eliminate shipping altogether.
Indie filmmakers shouldn’t rejoice just yet. The keys to the digital kingdom are still held by a very few players. But the cost to put your movie into real theaters across the world is going to go way way down.
