Endagadget is reporting that the acendent HD-DVD format (Microsoft just defected from the Blu-Ray camp) may not have region codes.

If you don’t know what region codes are, it’s the reason your Ali G British import DVD won’t play on your DVD player. It was ostensibly so studios could release DVDs at different prices in different world regions, rather than letting the laws of supply and demand apply.

Blu-ray, the other DVD format, punishes anyone who tries to disable the region code. Maybe the HD disc wars won’t be a Betamax redux. Maybe it will be like DVD and DivX.
