How David O. Russell’s Iraq Docu Hit Quicksand
greg allen tracks, in snarky fashion, how the fate of writer/director David O. Russell's new special edition DVD of Three Kings, meant to include a scathing documentary on U.S. treatment of Iraqi people, went the way of the Iraq war.
Sometime before Aug. 26:
Warner Bros. executives see the film. Turns out it's "political," which is something they never expected from an Iraq War film coming out weeks before an election.
Aug. 26:
Studio tells O. Russell the DVD/Theater thing's not happening, certainly not before November.Sept. 2:
LAT reports the release is scrapped. The reasons:
"Warner Bros. does not think it's appropriate to attach this polemic to an entertainment piece." - studio spokeswoman
"[the film's] strong political content may place the studio in violation of federal election laws." - said studio lawyers
"It's far from a polemic...It's not Michael Moore." - the director.
Sounds like Warners doesn't ? Huckabees. Read greg's full post about the quagmire.
